I Earn N14m Monthly as a Senator But Still Not Enough – Orji Kalu

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing the Abia North Senatorial District, recently made headlines by stating that his monthly take-home pay of N14 million is not adequate to meet the financial demands of his role. This assertion highlights the often misunderstood financial obligations faced by lawmakers in Nigeria.

While many citizens perceive senators as overpaid, Kalu emphasized that the reality is quite different. The senator pointed out that the financial requirements associated with serving their constituencies frequently exceed their official earnings. This statement sheds light on the complexities of governance and the financial pressures lawmakers experience.

In addition, Kalu revealed that he and several of his colleagues have resorted to using personal funds to finance developmental projects for their constituents. This initiative underscores a commitment to public service, demonstrating that many lawmakers are deeply invested in the welfare of the communities they represent.

Kalu’s remarks invite further discussion about the compensation of elected officials and the expectations placed upon them to support socio-economic development in their regions.

In his words:

“I am doing my best as a legislator for my constituency. I will never fail in my duty and I am sure most senators are doing their duties in their constituencies. I can never fail in Abia North Senatorial District.

“I earn N14 million in a month encompassing my salary, overhead and workers’ salaries. Let me be honest with you, do you know from this money I have to buy fuel to travel to my constituency? It’s not enough.”
