Petrol Tanker Somersaults in Oyo State, Spilling 60,000 Litres of Fuel

A major road incident was averted on Wednesday after a petroleum tanker carrying 60,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, somersaulted along the Oyo-Ogbomoso Expressway in Oyo State.

The accident occurred at Irepo Junction and involved a HOWO trailer tanker bearing registration number KMC65ZC, registered in Kano State. Eyewitnesses reported that the tanker lost control while in motion before flipping over and coming to rest by the roadside.

Sources at the scene confirmed that the tanker was fully loaded with PMS, and a significant quantity of the fuel began gushing out upon impact. Thankfully, no lives were lost, and no injuries were reported, avoiding what could have been a tragic explosion.

Hon. Maroof Akinwande, the Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, confirmed the incident and provided detailed insight into the emergency response. According to him, the tanker accident was reported to the Fire Service at precisely 3:51 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.

Fire service personnel were immediately dispatched to the scene to contain the hazard. Upon arrival, emergency responders met the overturned tanker and quickly initiated safety protocols to manage the fuel spillage.

“We promptly applied a chemical foam compound to the area to suppress any ignition risk,” Hon. Akinwande stated. “The chemical helped neutralize the flammable properties of the leaked petrol, preventing a potential fire outbreak from a nearby spark or heat source.”

He attributed the cause of the accident to the truck driver’s apparent lack of concentration while driving, which led to the tanker losing control and somersaulting off the expressway.

The Federal Fire Service also joined the operation, working in collaboration with the state fire personnel to ensure the scene was secured and safe from further hazards.

Additionally, officers from the Nigerian Police Force, Ojongbodu Division, were present to provide security and maintain order as emergency services carried out their operations.

Authorities have advised road users, especially heavy-duty drivers, to remain vigilant and cautious while navigating busy routes to prevent similar accidents that could pose threats to lives and property.
