Solomon Dalung, who served as a Minister of Youth and Sports Development, under ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has faulted President Bola Tinubu’s national broadcast, seeking an end to the ongoing nationwide hunger protest.
Dalung, who led the anti-government protest in Jos, Plateau State, last Thursday, August 1, was at an open-air church service held by the protesters on Sunday, August 4, in Jos.
Speaking to journalists at the Sunday service held at the Old Airport Roundabout, with a large crowd of protesters, including Christian and Muslim leaders, Dalung described Tinubu’s broadcast as empty, insisting that the protest was far from finished.
“The President’s speech was utterly disappointing,” said the former minister. “He failed to address the nation or appeal to the protesters to stand down. Instead, he chose to threaten them and instructed security forces to intensify their crackdown, which has already resulted in shootings and fatalities. His words were not directed at the Nigerian people, but rather seemed like a monologue shared with his cabinet members. Unfortunately, his response only serves to embolden our determination to press on with the protest.”
