Former Nigerian footballer Victor Ikpeba has called for Libya’s ban from international football following the inhumane treatment of the Super Eagles. The team remains stranded at Al Abaq Airport since their arrival on Sunday for a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match.

The Super Eagles’ captain, William Troost-Ekong, announced that the team will boycott the game against Libya’s Mediterranean Knights. This decision comes after the players endured unacceptable conditions.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has formally protested to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), condemning Libya’s actions. Ikpeba strongly echoed this sentiment, labeling Libya’s behavior as “barbaric” and advocating for severe consequences.

Ikpeba’s stance highlights the need for accountability and respect in international football. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for decisive action against Libya.

“If CAF know their job, Libya ought to be banned from international football,” Ikpeba, who is part of the Nigerian delegation in Libya for the AFCON qualifier, was quoted by SCORENigeria.

“CAF are not mindful of the safety and wellbeing of players across Africa.

“This is a high-risk country and one really wonders who approved for Libya to be playing their games at home.

“I played for the Super Eagles for 10 years and I never experienced what I have in Libya in the last hours.”
