Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja has rejected a request to recuse himself from the ongoing trial of Godwin Emefiele, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The defense team, led by Olalekan Ojo, had asked Justice Oshodi to step down due to alleged bias, citing his previous rulings as evidence. However, the judge found no merit in the application, stating that the allegations were unsubstantiated and lacked evidence.
Rotimi Oyedepo, counsel for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), opposed the recusal request, arguing that the trial had been conducted fairly and equitably. Justice Oshodi’s ruling means that he will continue to preside over the trial, which involves Emefiele facing a 19-count charge of receiving gratification and corrupt demands.
The case has been adjourned to May 26, 27, and 30, 2025, for further proceedings. Emefiele’s lawyer has also informed the court of a pending motion to appeal an earlier ruling, which upheld the court’s jurisdiction to hear the case.
He said:
“The claims of bias have not been substantiated by either of the defendants.
“Accordingly, the first and second defendants’ recusal application is refused.”
