The Peace Committee in Chanchanji, Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State, has expressed deep concern over the recent arrest of their chairman, Salem Mela, along with his wife and six children.
The arrest was carried out by men believed to be from the Department of State Services (DSS) early Thursday morning.
In a statement released in Jalingo, the state capital, the committee condemned the detention and demanded the immediate release of Mela’s wife and children. They emphasized that the continued detention of a pregnant woman and young children is inhumane and a violation of their fundamental rights.
The committee’s Secretary, Solomon John Kulenkwagh, signed the statement, which highlighted the unjust nature of the arrest and detention. The committee is seeking immediate action to address this situation and ensure the safety and well-being of Mela’s family.
The Peace Committee’s concerns underscore the need for transparency and accountability in the actions of law enforcement agencies. The detention of innocent family members, particularly vulnerable individuals such as pregnant women and children, raises serious questions about the conduct of the DSS operatives involved.
The committee urged the relevant authorities to act swiftly, calling for the release of the family members while any interrogation of Mela continues according to the law.
They stressed that the arrest of innocent family members is unjustifiable and contradicts the principles of justice and human rights, despite the committee’s commitment to promoting peace in the community.
