A Sudanese military transport plane crashed into a residential area on the outskirts of Khartoum, killing at least 19 people, according to the army-aligned health ministry. The Antonov aircraft went down near Wadi Seidna Air Base in Omdurman, a major Sudanese military hub, on Tuesday night during takeoff.
The crash resulted in fatalities among both military personnel and civilians, with witnesses reporting a loud explosion and damaged homes in the area. The incident also caused power outages in nearby neighborhoods.
The Sudanese army has been engaged in a violent conflict with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023. However, there is no indication that the crash was related to the conflict.
The actual number of fatalities is reported to be higher, with some sources indicating that at least 46 people were killed in the crash, including 17 military personnel and 29 civilians.
The statement reads:
“Search efforts are still ongoing to find the remaining martyrs under the rubble.”
