Former Benue State governor Gabriel Suswam, has expressed deep concerns about Nigeria’s current economic hardship, revealing that basic necessities have become unaffordable. He cited the drastic increase in the price of eggs, from less than N1,000 to N10,000 per crate, as an example of the struggles Nigerians face daily.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Suswam emphasized the urgent need for President Bola Tinubu to reassess his economic team. He called for an emergency meeting to address the country’s economic woes. The senator also highlighted the challenges Nigerians encounter with transportation to and from work, underscoring the widespread impact of the economic hardship.
Nigeria’s economic struggles are well-documented, with the country facing significant challenges, including inflation, which reached a 24-year high of 31.7% in February 2024 ¹. The World Bank has noted that Nigeria’s economic growth slowed between 2015 and 2022, driven by factors such as monetary and exchange rate policy distortions, increased fiscal deficits, and external shocks like the COVID-19 pandemic ¹.
To alleviate these issues, the government has implemented reforms, including partial elimination of the petrol fiscal subsidy and FX reforms. However, Suswam’s comments underscore the need for continued action to address the economic hardship and improve living standards for Nigerians.
According to Suswam:
“A crate of eggs that was less than N1,000 is N10,000 now. So it means that me and you can’t afford to eat eggs in our houses. I left government for almost 10 years.
“The President should call a meeting not just on economics; people cannot transport themselves to their offices, people cannot afford to feed their families.”
