Three mortuary attendants in Abia state’s Obingwa council area narrowly escaped being lynched by angry youths on Monday, March 31.
The incident occurred when a family discovered that their deceased son’s testicle was missing from his corpse, which had been deposited at the mortuary.
The family had gone to retrieve the body for burial when one of the daughters requested that the corpse be undressed for observation. Upon doing so, they found the testicle missing, sparking outrage among the youths who had accompanied the family to the mortuary.
The mortuary attendants attempted to flee but were caught by the angry youths. However, they managed to escape lynching.
The incident has raised concerns about the handling of corpses at the mortuary and the need for stricter regulations to prevent such incidents in the future.
”We don’t know that this mortuary is involved in such evil business; people have been suspecting him. It is an abomination in Igbo land to sever the body part of a dead person. Now, we have seen what he has done and why his business is flourishing. He was operating his mortuary business in that abandoned filling station. He and his attendants will answer for their crimes.”
The state police command is yet to comment on this development.
