Thomas Tuchel Finally Speaks After Becoming New England Boss
Thomas Tuchel has been officially announced as the new head coach of the England men’s football team, a move that has garnered significant attention. The German coach, 51, will officially take charge on January 1, 2025, after signing an 18-month contract. This appointment marks Tuchel as only the third non-British permanent head coach of the England team, following in the footsteps of previous foreign coaches.
In his first statement as head coach, Tuchel expressed his hope for England to “free ourselves from history” and focus on the aspirations of the upcoming 2026 World Cup. He acknowledged the weight of expectation on the national team, which has not secured a major trophy in 60 years. Tuchel emphasized his desire to work towards “making our dream come true” at the tournament.
When asked about his German nationality, Tuchel remarked, “I am sorry I have a German passport,” recognizing the debate over whether the role should have been filled by an English candidate. Despite the concerns surrounding his appointment, Tuchel is determined to guide England to success on the world stage and end the long-standing wait for a trophy.
As the team prepares for the World Cup, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how Tuchel’s leadership and vision unfold.
“Nothing is impossible in sports,” Tuchel told BBC sports editor Dan Roan.
“The federation is there, the women did it, the under-21s did it, so there is no reason [we can’t].
“At some point we have to free ourselves from history, we have to focus on the process and this will start from January.”
