I Left Manchester United Because Of My Wife – Sir Alex Ferguson
Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that his decision to retire from Manchester United was influenced by a personal commitment to spend more time with his wife, Cathy, following the passing of her sister. Ferguson concluded his illustrious 27-year managerial career at Old Trafford in 2013, marking the end of an era for the club.
Under Ferguson’s leadership, Manchester United secured an impressive array of trophies, including 13 Premier League titles and two Champions League victories, along with numerous other honors. His departure in 2013 occurred 13 years after he initially announced plans to step down, a decision he famously reversed at the time.
Despite assumptions that his retirement at 71 was due to age, Ferguson clarified on McCoist’s podcast, “Ally’s Social Club,” that his choice was driven by the desire to focus on family matters. This personal insight provides a deeper understanding of the motivations behind his decision to leave football.
“Cathy’s sister had died in the previous October and she was lost.
“She was definitely lost so at Christmas I said to her ‘Look, I’m going to retire at the end of the season’.
“I knew by her reaction that she was delighted because she was on her own. She had given her life to me, everything to me.
“[She was] looking after me because of my job… bringing the kids up. When I said I was going to retire, she was delighted and I knew that. I could tell by her body language.”
