‘Pay Your Taxes, Govt Needs To Make Money’ – Wike Tells Nigerians
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has urged the citizens of Nigeria to fulfill their tax obligations. He made this appeal during his address at the inaugural Abuja Business and Investment Summit, organized by the Abuja Investment Company Limited.
Speaking in Abuja, Wike emphasized the importance of the summit’s theme, ‘Optimising Investment Through Partnerships,’ which aligns with the Federal Government’s initiative to harness collaboration to enhance investment opportunities across the nation. He underscored that strategic partnerships are essential for driving economic growth and attracting foreign investment.
Wike highlighted a common misconception, stating that the belief the government does not require financial resources is misguided. He pointed out that without adequate revenue from taxes, the government would struggle to support and sustain vital public services and infrastructure development.
Furthermore, he stated that the government cannot continue to invest billions of naira in projects or investors that are unable to guarantee a return on investment. This caution reiterates the need for accountability and responsible investment practices to ensure that public funds are utilized effectively for the benefit of all Nigerians.
In his words:
“These are the kinds of things the government looks into and say how can I bring in the money and the land and at the end of the day, the government will not make a dime?
“When people say the government is not to make money, who told you that? If government is not to make money, how do we have money to provide services? The government needs money.
“That’s why the government say pay your tax; it’s very important. And so, while we provide the enabling environment, we also believe that we have to encourage you (investors) so that you get what you are supposed to get and the government gets what it is supposed to get. That way, everybody will go home smiling.”
