Peter Obi Hints 2027 Presidential Race May Be His Last

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has suggested that the 2027 general elections may mark his final attempt at contesting for Nigeria’s highest office.
His remarks were captured in a video clip that recently surfaced and has since gone viral on social media.
The video, which lasts just over seven minutes, features Obi speaking candidly about his political future. His media aide, Umar Ibrahim, has confirmed the authenticity and recency of the clip.
In the video, Obi explains that both age and evolving political dynamics may influence his decision to step back from active politics after 2027. “I believe we should have a retirement age for politicians. By 2027, I will be 65,” he said, suggesting that advancing age should signal the time to make way for younger leaders.
Obi, a former Governor of Anambra State, further noted that if the presidency rotates back to the North in 2031, it might not return to the South until 2039. By that time, he would be 77 years old—an age he believes is too late to seek public office. “If the presidency goes back to the North in 2031, it may not return to the South until 2039 — by then, I will be 77. I wouldn’t want to run for office at that age. It would make a mess of everything,” he stated.
While indicating a potential end to his electoral ambitions, Obi reiterated his unwavering support for Nigerian youth and his passion for driving transformational leadership. “Even if I’m not contesting, I will always support those of you who are committed to real change, with whatever resources I can provide,” he assured.
Peter Obi’s statement has sparked conversation across Nigeria’s political landscape, especially among his supporters and young Nigerians who see him as a symbol of reform and accountable governance.
