Equatorial Guinea has officially dismissed Baltasar Ebang Engonga, the Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), in light of a scandal that has garnered international attention. Engonga’s ousting comes after the emergence of over 400 explicit videos that surfaced online, featuring him in compromising situations with several high-profile women, including the wives of notable government officials.
The controversial videos purportedly show Engonga engaging in romantic affairs with prominent individuals, such as his brother’s wife, the vice president’s wife, and the wife of the inspector general of police, among others. This scandal has raised significant concerns regarding the integrity of public officials in the country.
The government made the announcement of Engonga’s dismissal in a formal statement, which was issued through Decree No. 118/2024, dated November 4. The decree cited “alleged misconduct in office” and behavior deemed “incompatible with public office” as the reasons for his removal. This incident underscores ongoing issues related to ethics and accountability among government officials in Equatorial Guinea.
The statement reads;
“According to Real Equatorial Guinea, the dismissal of Mr. Engonga, the son of Baltasar Engonga Edjo (current president of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa, CEMAC), was formalised in Decree No. 118/2024, dated November 4.”
“The decree cited Mr. Engonga’s alleged misconduct in office and his family-related and social behavior as incompatible with public office,”
