The Department of State Services (DSS) is investigating seven Polish nationals arrested in Kano during the recent #EndBadGovernance protests for displaying foreign flags during the demonstrations in Northern Nigeria.
DSS spokesperson Peter Afunanya emphasized that the arrest is not targeted at Polish nationals specifically. This update was shared during a meeting with the Diplomatic Corps, led by Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar, and attended by officials including Minister of Information Mohammed Idris, a representative of the National Security Adviser, the Inspector General of Police, and the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs.
The meeting addressed concerns arising from the nationwide protests that began on August 1, 2024. Minister Tuggar highlighted the government’s progress in reducing debt servicing from 90% to 68% of spending, as well as efforts to improve food security, create jobs, and attract investments.
He also noted the impact of negative social media narratives on national stability. Tuggar assured that the Federal Government is committed to protecting both diplomats and Nigerians and warned that anyone found guilty of funding the protests, whether inside or outside the country, would face consequences.
