Renowned Jamaican reggae artist Buju Banton made a remarkable revelation about his ancestry on the popular ‘Drink Champs’ podcast, hosted by N.O.R.E and DJ EFN.
Banton proudly disclosed that he has Igbo heritage, tracing his roots back to the Igbo tribe of Nigeria through his Maroon ancestry.
However, he expressed deep concern and frustration about the threat to his indigenous land and community.
According to Banton, the Jamaican government is encroaching on their territory by introducing Chinese and other foreign interests, which he fears will lead to the displacement of his people.
This heartfelt statement highlights the artist’s strong connection to his heritage and his determination to protect his community’s rights and traditions.”
He said,
“Our Indigenous way of life and our land are being threatened by the current government of Jamaica which seeks to bring Chinese and other nationalities into the Cockpit region which is an Indigenous sacred region to usurp us the Maroons as the warriors.
“Maroons are some of the Indigenous warriors on my Island. We fought the British relentlessly. We are called Blackmaroons. My generation originated from Nigeria. I am an Igbo man according to my bloodline.”
