Footballers Welfare Remains A Priority – FIFA

Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA, has reiterated the organization’s commitment to prioritizing player welfare amidst ongoing tensions with top European leagues and the players’ union, Fifpro. This statement comes following the filing of a legal complaint against FIFA to the European Commission. The complaint accuses FIFA of abusing its dominant position under EU competition law, particularly in relation to the international fixture calendar and the introduction of a new 32-team Club World Cup planned for next summer.

The complaint alleges that FIFA’s decisions have been made unilaterally, without adequate consultation, thus harming the economic interests of leagues and putting player welfare at risk. This has sparked significant concern among unions and clubs, who argue that such approaches undermine collaborative efforts and player safety.

In light of these issues, Infantino shared an image on Instagram of a meeting with David Aganzo, the president of the Spanish union AFE, held in Miami. The meeting underscores ongoing discussions around these critical issues, as stakeholders seek a resolution that balances the interests of all parties involved in international football.

Underneath it he wrote

“Fifa continues to work with player bodies to ensure player welfare remains a priority. I look forward to continue working with David and everyone at AFE to achieve this goal”.

World players’ union Fifpro declined to comment, but sources told the PA news agency that Aganzo’s meeting with Infantino was a personal one.

In September, Manchester City and Spain midfielder Rodri joined a growing chorus of voices in the game who suggested players were “close” to going on strike if their concerns on the congested calendar were not heard.
