Violence erupted in Rivers State on Wednesday as thugs attacked protesters and journalists, including Deborah Agbalam from Channels Television, who was covering the #EndBadGovernance protest in Port Harcourt.
The thugs, positioned near the Federal Secretariat, intimidated and dispersed protesters, while police officers in the vicinity failed to intervene.
Eyewitnesses reported that two protesters had already been beaten before journalists arrived on the scene.
The thugs also surrounded and threatened journalists, claiming they were there to prevent any protests. Despite the challenges, Rivers State Police Commissioner Olatunji Disu has vowed to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident to hold those responsible accountable and prevent future violence.
The incident marks Day 7 of the nationwide protest, which has also seen violence in some northern states. Notably, the police have generally maintained order during the protests, except for this isolated incident.
