‘It Is An Injustice To Me’ – Brazilians Slam Organisers For Not Giving Vini Jr. Ballon d’Or Award
Brazilian journalists and fans are expressing their dissatisfaction with the organizers of the Ballon d’Or award following Vinicius Junior’s loss in the race for the prestigious honor. On Monday, October 28, the Manchester City midfielder, Rodri, was announced as the winner of the Ballon d’Or in Paris. Notably, Vinicius and Real Madrid representatives chose not to attend the ceremony, highlighting their discontent with the decision.
Last season, Vinicius Junior had an impressive run with Real Madrid, contributing significantly to the team’s success as the leading scorer. Real Madrid secured victory in both La Liga and the Champions League, and Vinicius’s performance played a crucial role in these achievements. Despite his outstanding performance, he was unable to clinch the Ballon d’Or award, ultimately placing second behind Rodri. Rodri’s triumph was likely bolstered by his contributions to Spain’s victory in Euro 2024 and other notable successes.
This outcome has sparked considerable debate, with some Brazilian analysts, as reported by the BBC, labeling the decision as one of the most controversial in the history of the Ballon d’Or. They described the verdict as unfair and possibly driven by motives beyond mere performance on the field, which many view as a vindictive action against Vinicius
Gustavo Faldon, of the Brazilian daily Estadao said:
“The [treatment of] Vinicius was the biggest injustice in the history of Ballon d’Or.
“The fact that he is Brazilian, plays for Real Madrid, and is a forward should have worked in his favour in the history of the award.”
