Workers Escape Death As 2-Story Building Collapses In Umuahia
A two-story building still under construction has collapsed at No. 20 Ozuitem Street in Umuahia, the capital of Abia State. The structure, reportedly owned by a “very wealthy” local resident, fell on Christmas Day, a day when site workers had taken the day off.
The official cause of the collapse has not yet been determined; however, some nearby residents have voiced concerns that substandard materials may have been used by the contractor, potentially compromising the building’s integrity. One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed gratitude for the absence of workers that day, stating, “Yesterday was Christmas Day and there was no work. If not, who knows what would have happened?”
It has been reported that the contractor has gone into hiding since the incident, possibly to avoid arrest or questioning. When DAILY POST visited the site on Thursday afternoon, a bulldozer was seen demolishing the remaining parts of the structure to prevent any further collapse that could impact adjacent houses.
Notices from the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA), dated December 26, 2024, were prominently displayed around the site, indicating that it had been sealed.
Mrs. Nkeiru Ogba, the Public Relations Officer of the UCDA, confirmed that her office had visited the collapse site to investigate the incident. She noted that many owners of buildings that have collapsed within the state often fail to follow the proper procedures or comply with official regulations.
