Delta Boat Tragedy: Many Missing, Toddler, Others Dead
It was a sorrowful weekend when over 30 passengers, including a toddler, lost their lives during a tragic boat accident at Beneth Island in Gbaramatu Kingdom, located in the Warri South-West local government area of Delta State. Reports from DAILY POST indicate that while many individuals are still missing, the lifeless body of a one-year-old child was discovered hours later, floating along the creek.
The speedboat, which was carrying passengers returning from a burial ceremony, collided with a submerged log, ultimately leading to the boat capsizing. This collision resulted in many passengers being thrown overboard into the water. Unfortunately, many of those on board were unable to swim and were not wearing life jackets, which contributed to the high number of casualties.
Eyewitnesses reported that the boat was traveling at high speed at the time of the accident. Survivors recounted harrowing moments of desperation, describing how passengers struggled to stay afloat in the treacherous waters.
In response to the tragedy, search and rescue efforts have been launched; however, the fate of the missing passengers remains uncertain. Rescue teams are continuing to comb the area where the accident took place, but as time passes, hopes of finding survivors are diminishing.
Bright Edafe, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Delta State Command, has promised to provide further details regarding the accident as they become available.
