According to eyewitnesses, the accident was caused by brake failure as the trailer descended the slope of the road. The trailer’s loss of control led to the catastrophic crash.

Several others were injured, including a pupil who lost their mother in the accident. Four of the injured, including two primary school children, were rushed to the nearby Amuloko City Hospital for treatment. Two others with severe injuries were admitted for further care.

A staff member of the Oyo Road Transport Maintenance Agency (OYRTMA), who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed the incident. The deceased victims were taken to an undisclosed hospital.

The tragic incident highlights the need for increased road safety measures and regular vehicle maintenance to prevent such accidents.

“Having lost control, it crushed a tricycle popularly called Keke NAPEP. Another lorry was carrying soft drinks which was coming from behind it and tried to avoid hitting the trailer in front, and in the process hit and crushed another Keke NAPEP. We learned that six persons died while five persons sustained injuries. They have all been conveyed away from here,” the staff said.

The Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, Oyo State Command, Mrs. Rosemary Alo confirmed the accident but said she would speak officially when her men briefs her appropriately.

Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, said the FRSC commander would give a detailed report on the accident.
