The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a police officer and three civilians in Aondona Village, Gwer West Local Government Area, following a deadly attack by suspected armed herdsmen.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sewuese Anene, made the disclosure on Monday while addressing journalists in Makurdi. She noted that the attack occurred in Aondona, where the police officer was fatally shot while trying to defend residents during the assault.

“The police responded promptly when the incident in Aondona was reported. Three bodies were recovered, and an investigation is currently ongoing,” Anene said.

She also revealed that prior to the Aondona attack, another police officer had been killed while trying to protect a nearby village within the same local government area.

However, local residents painted a more devastating picture, claiming the attacks affected four separate communities and left more than 30 people dead, seven others injured, and two kidnapped. According to eyewitness accounts, the violence has displaced numerous residents who are now fleeing for safety.

In neighboring Gwer East Local Government, people in Mablim community, which shares a boundary with Aondona, have also reportedly fled to Taraku town to escape further violence.

A community source provided more grim details, stating that over 15 individuals were killed in Aondona alone, with seven deaths recorded in Ahume, five in Tyolaha, and six in Orbiam. Two people were also allegedly kidnapped during the series of attacks.

According to the source, the armed herdsmen began their onslaught in Aondona on Saturday evening, continuing their attacks into Monday in Ahume and surrounding villages.

As investigations continue, residents are calling for increased security and proactive measures to prevent further bloodshed in the region.
