The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has authorized the disconnection of Exchange Telecommunications Limited from MTN Nigeria’s network due to unpaid interconnect charges. The NCC found that Exchange Telecommunications, a carrier for local and international interconnections, failed to provide adequate justification for its non-payment of financial obligations.
In a statement issued on Friday, December 27, Reuben Muoka, the NCC’s director of public affairs, confirmed the decision. “The Nigerian Communications Commission hereby notifies the public that approval has been granted for the disconnection of Exchange Telecommunications Limited (Exchange) from MTN Nigeria Communications Limited (MTN) as a result of non-settlement of interconnect charges,” the statement said.
Exchange was given the opportunity to respond to the application but was found to lack sufficient reasons for the non-payment of the charges. The disconnection decision follows Section 100 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003, and the Guidelines on Procedure for Granting Approval to Disconnect Telecommunications Operators, 2012.
The NCC stated, “At the expiration of five days from the date of this notice, MTN will discontinue passing voice and data traffic through Exchange and will then utilize alternative channels for interconnecting with other Network Service Providers.” The disconnection will remain in effect until the NCC determines otherwise.
