A devastating fire broke out on a fully loaded Lagos Ferry Services (LAGFERRY) passenger boat, Igbega Eko, at the Ipakodo Ferry Terminal in Ikorodu, Lagos. The incident occurred shortly after departing for Victoria Island, sending panic among passengers.
Fortunately, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) safety officers responded promptly to the distress call, rescuing all passengers and crew on board.
Although no casualties were recorded, four passengers suffered minor injuries and are currently receiving medical attention. LASWA is currently conducting preliminary investigations into the cause of the incident, collaborating with LAGFERRY and other stakeholders to ensure a comprehensive assessment.
This incident is not the first of its kind in Lagos, as there have been previous boat accidents in the area. However, thanks to the prompt response of LASWA safety officers, this incident did not result in any fatalities.
According to LASWA, their emergency response team worked closely with LAGFERRY boat operators and first responders to manage the situation effectively.
“We are currently conducting thorough preliminary investigations into the cause of the incident, collaborating with LAGFERRY and other stakeholders to ensure a comprehensive assessment,” LASWA said in a statement.
“Safety is our utmost priority, and we are committed to implementing any necessary recommendations to enhance fire prevention measures throughout the Lagos waterways.
“LASWA assures the public that all safety protocols remain intact and ferry operations are proceeding as scheduled. We encourage all passengers to stay calm and adhere to safety guidelines while enjoying our waterways,” it added.
