In a tragic incident near Damagum Bus Stop in Fune Local Government Area of Yobe State, no fewer than six individuals lost their lives, and several others sustained injuries in a devastating road crash that occurred on Sunday. The calamity unfolded when an 18-seater bus collided with a pedestrian brick, leading to the driver losing control of the vehicle. This unfortunate event underscores the critical need for enhanced road safety measures in the region.
The Yobe State Emergency Medical Ambulance Services, known as YEMABUS, acted swiftly in response to the emergency call. They promptly evacuated the deceased and injured passengers to nearby medical facilities, initially taking them to General Hospital Damagum and subsequently to Yobe State University Teaching Hospital Damaturu. This hospital is located approximately 60 kilometers from the accident site, and the timely intervention by the emergency services undoubtedly played a crucial role in managing the crisis.
In the wake of the accident, the Yobe State Road Traffic Management Agency (YOROTA) issued a stern warning to motorists regarding the dangers of overspeeding. The statement, delivered by the agency’s Public Relations Officer, Musa Ali Maigari, highlighted the tragic consequences of the Damagum accident. YOROTA’s plea to motorists and road users emphasizes vigilance and strict adherence to traffic rules and regulations as vital measures to prevent such devastating incidents in the future.
