The Federal Government has reversed its decision to close the Independence Bridge in Lagos for repairs, opting instead to reopen it to vehicular traffic immediately. This sudden change of plans comes after the bridge’s closure caused massive traffic gridlocks across the city.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, issued the directive on Wednesday, acknowledging the inconvenience caused by the closure and appealing for public understanding and cooperation. The government has decided to implement palliative measures to ensure the bridge remains motorable, while deferring full rehabilitation works to a later date.
The closure had resulted in severe traffic jams, with commuters facing significant delays and alternative routes becoming heavily congested. The reopening of the bridge is expected to bring relief to Lagos residents, who had been spending hours on the road due to the closure.
