Salihu Tanko Yakasai, a former media aide to former Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, has shed light on the reason behind Northerners displaying Russian flags during the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests. The protests, which began on August 1, aim to express dissatisfaction with the country’s economic woes and food inflation.
Notably, some protesters in the Northern region have been seen waving Russian flags in viral videos. According to Yakasai, this unusual display is a tactic to grab the federal government’s attention, suggesting that the protesters are willing to explore unconventional means to make their voices heard and prompt action from the authorities.
Yakasai tweeted on Monday:
“The average northerner is well informed.
“They heard stories on BBC Hausa & DW of what happened in Mali, Burkina, & Niger.
“They want to use the flag to get the attention of FG.
“My fear is that they may end up getting the attention of external forces who’ll take advantage of it.”
The Russian Embassy in Nigeria has already distanced itself from the protesters.
In a statement on Monday, it emphasised that their actions do not reflect any official Russian government policy or position.
