The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has officially denied reports of introducing new N5,000 and N10,000 banknotes. The reports, which claimed the new notes would be released on May 1, 2025, to reduce cash-handling costs and improve liquidity management, were labeled as false by the CBN.
The CBN took to its official social media page to clarify that the content in question did not come from any official channels, and that the only legitimate source for such announcements is the CBN’s official website.
The reports had attributed the introduction of the new notes to a supposed Deputy Governor, Dr. Ibrahim Tahir Jr., but the CBN has stated that there is no individual by that name in its leadership.
The CBN’s swift denial highlights the growing concern about the spread of misinformation, especially on social media platforms.
The bank urges the public to be cautious and rely on verified sources for information on any official policy changes.
