t’s unfair for artistes to sign others just as milestone – Simi

Nigerian singer and songwriter Simisola Kosoko, popularly known as Simi, has shared her perspective on the increasing trend of established artists launching record labels to sign emerging talents.

While she admits she is open to mentoring younger musicians, she expressed concerns about artists treating label deals as vanity projects rather than meaningful commitments.

In a recent interview with VJ Adams, Simi explained that the music business should be handled by professionals who truly understand and care about artist development.

She cautioned against established musicians signing others simply to mark a milestone in their career, without the long-term dedication it takes to support another artist’s growth.

“I think it’s not fair when an artist signs another artist just as a milestone,” she said. “That’s actually somebody’s life. That’s their dream. You need passion and belief in the music business to stick with an artist, even when things aren’t going smoothly.”

Simi added that while she could sign an artist, she’s unsure if she has the consistent energy and drive required to properly manage someone else’s career.

She emphasized that artists deserve to be seen as more than just a project or achievement for someone else, especially when so much of their future is on the line.
