‘I’m Not An Afrobeats Artiste’ – Flavour Declares
Renowned Nigerian highlife singer, Chinedu Okoli, popularly known as Flavour, has made a significant clarification about his music genre.
In a recent episode of the ‘Afrobeats Podcast’ hosted by Shopsydoo, Flavour stated that he does not identify as an Afrobeats artist.
Flavour explained that he is not concerned about not receiving recognition for his role in the global rise of Nigeria’s Afrobeats genre, as he belongs to a different musical category.
He emphasized that while he deserves credit for his contributions to African music, the media’s focus on Afrobeats as the primary genre from Africa has overshadowed his achievements.
By speaking out, Flavour highlights the diversity of African music and the need for broader recognition of various genres, beyond just Afrobeats.
His comments spark a conversation about the importance of inclusivity and accurate representation in the music industry.
He said:
“I don’t feel bad when I’m not given credit on the global rise of African music because what the media is talking about is Afrobeats. I’m not an Afrobeats artiste,”
What I’m doing is African music. There are guys like Fally Ipupa, Diamond Platinumz who are pushing African music globally that are not Afrobeats artists.
“Most times, the media just talks about Afrobeats. They are not talking about African music. If you talk about African music, of course, you should mention my name.”
